Apparently yesterday was MP’s 21st birthday, and he was spotted in a local Cambridge alehouse last night having quite the party. Spotted with two unidentified non-Hillelites, he was apparently celebrating well into the night. We wish him a happy birthday and hope that he learns, with time, to drink responsibly.

The first education programming we get this year is a discussion about Jewish sexual ethics?

How might Judaism’s teachings on sex surprise, and even shock us from our contemporary point of view? What does it mean to move through the world with a “Jewish sexual ethic?” Does, or can, traditional Judaism intersect with sex-positive feminism? What exactly is “kosher sex”?

This reminds me of something…but I can’t seem to put my finger on it. Oh, right! Now I remember.

Hillel hosted “Kosher Sex: The Game Show” in Adams Lower Common Room (LCR) on Monday as part of the week’s Jewbilation festivities. Done in Jeopardy-fashion, the trivia game tapped into potentially touchy areas, including the category “I ‘Know’ You Biblical Relations.” … But the underwhelming attendance—a mere 13—seemed to indicate that it wasn’t a priority for many Hillel members.

Now, if I recally correctly, half the people in attendance at Kosher Sex had to be dragged there because the planners were worried that attendance would be pathetic. And it was pathetic. So why are we doing Kosher Sex again? Or, at the very least, why aren’t we doing something else too?

By the way, check out this awesome link to some random blog that picked up on the Crimson’s trashing of Kosher Sex last year.

Since the very beginning, this blog has had two central goals. First, to get AH appointed Crimson Cutie. Second, to raise awareness about KP’s appetite for absolute and total control. Friends, we are now half way there.

Now we just have to deal with KPoz. It will be tough. He has complete control of the Hillel propoganda machine: postering, website, and, umm, postering. Any attempt at protest and we can expect to be crushed by him and his communications team. He has complete control over the email lists. As moderator of all 20 of the Hillel related email lists (seriously! why do we have so many?) he can squash criticism before it even starts. Also, the Hillel by-laws stipulate that all position papers must be turned into him. He runs the elections. A very powerful, and dangerous, man.

Fortunately, it’s relatively easy to remove him from power.

XI.D. The Vice President for Communications can be removed from the Steering Committee by a unanimous vote of the other Steering Committee members if s/he is being lax in the performance of her/his responsibilities.

OK, great. So now just need to check out what his responsibilities are. So let’s go to the official document, the bylaws, which contain what his responsibilities are… Oh no. I’m too late. KPoz has struck again. KPoz has removed his responsibilities from the bylaws. Seriously: Article V is empty, there’s nothing there.

…Article V: Communications Committee

[nothing!]

Article VI: Community Building Committee

The Community Building Committee shall…

May God help us all.

Solarium…I had never heard of that word before stepping into Harvard Hillel. What a funny room. What a funny jewel/sphere on top of that room. What exactly is that giant orb supposed to be? Everytime I look at it I think that a laser should be shooting out of it. It looks like a rejected prop from Mr. Freeze’s lair.

But I know why Hillel has a solarium: financial reasons. According to this website the addition of a sunroom pays off. WTF? A sunroom/solarium is a room that exists soley to allow sunlight in. The only way that pays off is if you have chloroplasts. Whatevers-maybe Hillel can contact these guys and figure out how to get solariums to pay off.

P.S. 33% of an investment in a swimming pool pays off? What does that mean. I need to spend less time googling. Just because someone is wrong on the internet…

In the previous post, I commented on an SC agenda. Now, is it inappropriate for me to publish stuff from the private SC meeting? No, twice. No, first because the agendas were just laying around the Solarium. You shouldn’t leave stuff lying around Hillel when you know that anyone and everyone has a blog. No, secondly, because SC should be held accountable for what they do during their meetings. Where do I get a crazy idea like that? First, from members of SC who think that accountability to the community is the purpose of CoCo. And the second place I get that idea is from Mrs. President:

Taken at its very core, Steering Committee is designed to represent the entire Hillel community. I propose the following changes in order to ensure that this happens:
• SC Agenda and Updates: An agenda and periodic updates must be sent to the Hillel-undergrad list before each SC meeting, so that the community is made aware of what will be discussed that week.

Or, how about from this position paper from SJ:

On the most basic level, SC can keep the community informed about what it is working on. By simply sending out a regular agenda, SC can remove some of the “mystery” surrounding its discussions and give the community a chance to see what it is doing… Furthermore, SC can make itself more accountable to the community by instituting a regular, anonymous evaluation system.

Neither of these noble goals panned out. I don’t know why–that’s just the way the world is. So here is my offer to SC, and SJ: I’ll do these things for you. I’ll help you hold SC accountable. If you want to email me SC agendas, I’ll post them. If you want to have SC evaluated, then tell me and we can coordinate something. If you guys are serious about holding SC accountable, I (and this blog) can help.

And enough serious stuff. The next few posts will be more fun.

The funniest Harvard publication is Freeze Magazine. I love them. I love their slogan–”Crimson is the new black.” (And someday we will elect a crimson president). I love their articles. This one caught my eye: “Why You Don’t Have a Boyfriend: The Reasons You Haven’t Thought Of”.

Body odor

You have a girlfriend

You’re fat (see p.2 for Freeze Dieting Tips!!! LOL PINK.)

The only problem is that I can’t really write a post just on Freeze because it has absolutely nothing to do with Harvard Hillel. So I was tempted to ask everybody to nominate SC hottie AH for the Freeze College Magazine Cutie of the Week. But then I thought better. Actually, no, I still think it would be awesome. So, if you’re one of my ten readers please nominate AH!!!

—-

Also, I have some leaks from the SC meeting. Looks like there will be significant pre-gaming before John Harvard’s Bar Mitzvah…and SC is happy about it. Here’s the quote from the agenda: “Very excited to have pre-games for the event. I have heard a lot of positive feedback, so far ~ hopefully this will translate into an actually fun event.” Now, maybe I’m misinterpreting what’s going on. Also, I’m a loser who blogs, so my idea of a fun time is probably skewed. But if our hopes on having a fun event depend on people drinking before the event, eh, maybe the event isn’t so fun. Just a thought. Correct me if I’m wrong in the comments. [Update: It's been pointed out to me that I'm wrong about this, and that this is a quite normal thing for a member of SC to be excited about.]

Also, I was impressed by the list of things on the agenda for CommRel. They included “Homeless shelter shift, genetic screning info session, manicure for the cure”. The first two sound worthy, I have no idea what the third one is but presumably it’s trying to cure something bad. Not sure what the “John Harvard’s Bar Mitzvah Project” is, but sounds intriguing.

Finally, Education has one thing on the agenda: “Inviting professors to Shabbat dinner?” Doesn’t strike me as a fantastic idea, but at least it’s something. Education doesn’t feel like it’s been particularly active so far this year, and we here at HillelGossip eagerly await some more creative educational opportunities.

The only committee who didn’t post updates is Shabbat and Holidays.

The only logical conclusion from this post is that this blogger is a member of SC.
